Better Red Than Dead: Winemaker Kevin Doyle Pours His Soul Into His Work
"If you taste a little salt in the wine, that's the sweat dripping off my brow," Kevin Doyle says of the wines he makes at his Woody Creek Cellars. As a joke, the line only goes so far. There's too much truth to it. Doyle makes his wines the old-fashioned way no stainless steel tanks, no filters or chemicals at all so there's a far greater chance that a drinker will taste Doyle's sweat in the wine than a metallic or chemical sensation. And the effort he puts into his wine is bound to cause perspiration. Doyle is essentially a one-man operation: he hustles around the Western Slope making deals for grapes; he self-distributes, driving from Boulder restaurants to Telluride liquor shops to the Aspen Saturday Market to get his bottles into the hands of consumers.

Apple Shed Becomes Tasting Room
The AppleShed Arts Complex and Gallery, located at 250 S. Grand Mesa Drive in Cedaredge, has joined the county's long list of wine tasting rooms. According to owner Connie Williams, the AppleShed became the "official" local tasting room for winemaker Kevin Doyle's Wood Creek Cellars in early April. Doyle's award winning wines are produced in an old apple packing shed in Orchard City. According to the Woody Creek Cellars web site, the wines are made with primitive equipment using no chemicals, handpicked grapes, punched down, cold masseration and gravity flow. Wood Creek Cellars focuses on small lot production and high quality.

Weinberg s Wine Notes #101 Colorado Wine Redux
Another choice treat, this time with a slice of sage-and-pancetta-roasted veal, was the Woody Creek Cellars Tempranillo, a dill, ash, boysenberry and green pea masterpiece that evoked memories of Spain with every bite and sip.

Woody Creek's Wine Savant
For the second consecutive year, Kevin Doyle's Woody Creek Cellars wines have garnered numerous medals in Colorado state wine competitions, and in late July he accomplished what he says no other Colorado wine has done before him: Two of his wines the 2004 Merlot and the nonvintage unfiltered Chardonnay received 88-point scores from Wine Spectator Magazine's editor-at-large Harvey Steiman on his blog at winespectator.com. Steiman also put Doyle's 2005 Tempranillo at 86 points. Doyle says the previous high for a Colorado wine was 84.

Local Cellar: Woody Creek Vintner Making Award-Winning Wines
(www.aspendailynews.com/section/entertainment)
After walking up a set of rickety steps past large bins full of shriveled, drained grapes with flies hovering above like clouds floating on a valley floor, two men have all of their attention on a barrel that's half the size of a small car. One of the men is Woody Creek Cellars owner Kevin Doyle, and the other is Scott Brown, his current apprentice. A ruby fluid with opaque undertones flows from the bottom.
